DESCRIPTION:
Set in the early '40s and directed by Raoul Walsh, The Revolt of Mamie Stover stars Jane Russell as Mamie, a San Francisco prostitute who is run out of town just as the second world war has begun to intensify. Mamie (Russell) settles down in Hawaii, hoping to start a new life. Though her prospects look good when she falls in love with a science-fiction writer (Richard Egan) who treats her with the respect she deserves, the dawning war and the fallacies of her previous lifestyle complicate their budding romance. Mamie cannot fully remove herself from her former profession, and provides some of her old services to the sailors stationed in town. Searching for another means of financial security, Mamie invests in several pieces of real estate and becomes quite wealthy, though her bad reputation has not been forgotten by the locals. The part of Mamie Stover was originally intended for Marilyn Monroe, but Russell stepped in when Monroe passed up the offer. The Revolt of Mamie Stover also features Joan Leslie, Agnes Moorehead, and Jorja Curtright.

CONDITION:
This quality vintage and original still in EXCELLENT condition (old yes, but the only sign of wear is a small tear in the upper right hand corner), it is has sharp, crisp details and it is not a re-release, not digital or a repro. It came from the studio to the theater during the year of release and then went into storage where the collector I bought them from kept them for over 57 years! I have recently acquired two huge collections from life long movie buffs who collected for decades… I need to offer these choice items for sale on a first come, first service basis to the highest bidder.

BACKGROUND:
Had The Revolt of Mamie Stover been filmed a few years later, it might have been a much better film; at the very least, it would have been more faithful to the William Bradford Huie novel that is its source. But, being filmed in 1956, Mamie had to soften the rough edges; since the rough edges are what give the story its distinction, this resulted in a pretty dull film. While a more "honest" version might still have gone wrong, at least it could have more accurately explored the sexuality and sensuality at the story's core, as well as the double standard applied to men and women, the immorality of war profiteering and other themes. Instead, Mamie ends up being yet another variation on the hooker with a heart of gold story. As that hooker (or dance hall hostess, as she's depicted here), Jane Russell certainly looks the part; she's not beautiful, but she's appropriately lusty. Unfortunately, her dramatic work is not up to the task; she's pretty much all surface. Richard Egan is fine as the "good man" she desires, but only Agnes Moorehead really shines in the film. Raoul Walsh's direction is adequate, but below his usual standard.
Voluptuous sex symbol and star of Hollywood films, TV, and nightclubs, Jane Russell was the daughter of an actress. She worked as a receptionist and model, and studied theater at Max Reinhardt's Theatrical Workshop and with Maria Ouspenskaya. Endowed with a large bust, she won the lead role in Howard Hughes's The Outlaw (1941) after Hughes conducted a nationwide search for a curvaceous actress, eventually finding her working in his dentist's office. The film caused a storm of controversy due primarily to the amount of cleavage shown by Russell onscreen, and, after brief releases in 1941 and 1943, it was not officially released until 1950. The controversy brought her much publicity, often in the form of off-color, sophomoric jokes. However, she surpassed her mindless "bombshell" image and went on to perform with versatility in a number of films during the subsequent three decades, including comedies with Bob Hope and musicals with Marilyn Monroe. She often played cynical, "tough broads," and starred in the Broadway musical Company in 1971. TV viewers may also remember her for a series of bra commercials during the '70s.
A holder of a BA degree from the University of San Francisco, Richard Egan was an Army judo instructor during World War II. While working towards his MA in theatre at Stanford University, the rugged Egan was discovered by a Warner Bros. talent scout. After his apprenticeship in supporting roles, Egan was signed as a leading man by 20th Century-Fox, where he was touted as "another Gable." Most comfortable in brawling adventure films, Egan proved a capable dramatic actor in such films as A View from Pompey's Head (1955). Many of his starring appearances in the 1960s were in such esoterica as Esther and the King (1960) and The 300 Spartans (1962) and in foreign-filmed westerns. In 1962, Egan starred as Jim Redigo, foreman of a sprawling New Mexico ranch, in the contemporary western TV series Empire; for its second season, the series was shortened from one hour to thirty minutes per week, and retitled Redigo. During his last decade, Richard Egan was a prolific dinner-theatre star throughout the U.S., and also appeared as Samuel Clegg II on the TV daytime drama Capitol.
