Capt. Ralph “Shug” Jordan was more than a legend coach at Auburn, he was a WWII hero. A member of the U.S. Army’s First Engineer Special Brigade, Jordan was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his action during the D-Day invasion. He was part of the Utah Beach landing who would comment “there weren’t any atheists on those landing crafts. Everybody was praying to God and anybody that would listen.” The Jordan Era began in 1951. His teams won 175 games, 24 without a loss from 1956-58, won a national championship in 1957 and went to 12 bowls before he retired in 1975. "Shug" produced 20 All-Americans; he coached Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan, and Zeke Smith, Outland Trophy recipient. Coach Jordan died July 18, 1980.
